Unless explicitly stated on the documentation for a method, the accepted Web API call content types are:

application/json

Calls using any other content type (ex: text/plain) are not supported.

Whether the item type is system-defined.

Remarks

System-defined item types are used for items such as assets and Service Catalog services, which are backed by those appropriate systems but still have alternate representations as configuration items.
